Appendix Carry in NJ: Advantages, Disadvantages & Safety Considerations

2 min read

Appendix Inside-the-Waistband (AIWB) carry has become a popular concealed-carry method. The firearm is positioned toward the front of the waistband, generally around the 12–1 o’clock position.

For individuals considering concealed carry in New Jersey, it is important to understand both the benefits and potential risks of appendix carry before choosing this method.

Advantages of Appendix Carry

Concealment: The front-waist position can make it easier to conceal a handgun under a shirt, sweatshirt, or jacket, making AIWB a popular choice for everyday concealed carry.

Accessibility: Appendix carry can provide consistent access to the firearm while standing, sitting, or moving.

Retention: The position allows the carrier to more easily monitor and protect the firearm while a quality holster helps keep it securely in place.

Comfort: While comfort varies from person to person, some carriers find appendix carry more comfortable than carrying behind the hip, particularly while sitting or driving.

Disadvantages and Safety Concerns

The Risk of Negligent Discharge

The most important consideration with appendix carry is the potential consequence of a negligent discharge. Because of the firearm's location, an unintended discharge can result in serious or catastrophic injury. This makes proper equipment, safe handling, and disciplined reholstering especially important.

Comfort and Equipment

AIWB is not comfortable for everyone. Body type, firearm size, clothing, and holster design can all affect comfort. A quality AIWB holster should securely retain the firearm and completely cover the trigger guard. A sturdy gun belt can also help keep the firearm and holster properly positioned.

Reholstering

Reholstering deserves particular attention when carrying appendix.

Never rush the process. Make sure clothing, drawstrings, or other objects cannot enter the trigger-guard area. Take your time and carefully return the firearm to the holster.

Is Appendix Carry Right for You?

There is no single carry position that works for everyone. Your body type, clothing, daily activities, equipment, and experience should all be considered when choosing a concealed-carry method. For NJ CCW permit holders and individuals preparing for concealed carry, professional training can help develop safe and consistent firearm-handling habits.
